Claire (Schmidt) Holand, 84, of Ridgefield Crossings, Ridgefield, CT, wife of the late Saul Holand died on Wednesday, September 9, 2009 at Danbury Hospital.

Mrs. Holand was born in Poland, November 17, 1924, a daughter of Bernard and Helene Schmidt.
Mrs. Holand was the sole member of her family surviving the Holocaust.

A resident of Ridgefield for the past two years coming from the Bronx, Mrs. Holand was an “Avon Lady” selling beauty aid products for many years. She appreciated life, being with people, enjoying a good laugh and exchanging numerous life stories.

She loved to knit and made numerous pairs of booties for family and friends and many which she donated to the Neonatal Unit at the Danbury Hospital.

She was an avid Bingo player.

Mrs. Holand always put herself last and others first.

She is survived by a son, Bernard M. Holand and his wife Mary Ann of Danbury, CT; a daughter, Helene Alalouf and her husband Howard of Yonkers, NY and five grandchildren, Ron Alalouf and his wife Samantha, Scott Holand, Jordan Holand, Shannon Moran and Sean Moran.

Graveside funeral services and burial will take place at Beth David Cemetery, Elmont, NY with Rabbi Eric Eisenkramer of Temple Shearith Israel, Ridgefield, officiating. The cemetery is located at: 300 Elmont Road,
