Rose Marie Scalzo

Rose Marie (Rodrigues) Scalzo, age 89, wife of the late John B. Scalzo and mother of Anthony Scalzo, died peacefully at her home on Sunday, October 20, 2019.
Mrs. Scalzo was born on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 1929, the daughter of the late Edgar M. Sr. (Egas Moniz) and Mary R. (Rotundo) Rodrigues.
A lifelong Danbury resident first residing with her family in the home of her maternal grandparents, Thomas and Rose Rotundo on Delay Street, Mrs. Scalzo attended St. Peter School graduating with the Class of 1943 and graduated from Danbury High School with the Class of 1947.
Because of her name sake, Rose Marie was especially favored by her grandmother and maternal great grandmother who lived with them.
Mrs. Scalzo enjoyed the time being with her family, attending the former Danbury State Fair as well as reading, sewing, and most especially the holidays. She loved baking for Easter and Christmas; thus maintains a long standing family tradition which today has been passed on to her son.
In early years, Mrs. Scalzo was employed with the former Genung’s Department Store of Danbury and later with Consolidated Controls of Bethel.
She was a charter and life member of the Catholic War Veterans Auxiliary of Danbury as well as a past president and serving in almost every office.
Mrs. Scalzo also served two two year terms as a CT State President of the Catholic War Veterans Auxiliary, a member of AARP #1067.
A woman of great faith and Catholic identity, she was a member and communicant of St. Gregory the Great Church for the past 57 years.
In addition to her devoted son, Anthony, Rose Marie is survived by two nieces, Nancy Reardon and her husband Bruce of Shelton and Diane Evatt and her husband Cam of South Carolina; a niece and godchild Christina Koukopoulos and her husband Pano of Woodbury; brothers in law Carmen Scalzo and his wife Donna and Anthony Scalzo both of Danbury, Louis Scalzo of Bethel and Frank and his wife Colleen Scalzo of Jupiter, FL and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews of the Scalzo families.
Mrs. Scalzo, in addition to her husband and parents was predeceased by a brother Edgar M. Rodrigues Jr. and his wife, Norma, an infant sister, brother in law Joseph Scalzo and niece and godchild Louise Scalzo.
A Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday, October 26, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Gregory the Great Church.
Interment will follow in St. Peter Cemetery, Danbury.
Friends will be received in the Jowdy-Kane Funeral Home, 9-11 Granville Ave., Danbury between the hours of 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.
In keeping with Mrs. Scalzo’s wishes, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Gregory the Great Church, 85 Great Plain Rd. or to Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 46 Stone St., both of Danbury.
