Mary B. Walker

Mary B. Walker, 86, of Danbury, formerly of Ridgefield, wife of the late Stanley Walker, died at her residence on Tuesday afternoon, May 19, 2015. Mrs. Walker was born in Westport, Ct. June 19, 1928, a daughter of Edward and Pearl (Payne) Burkey. She attended Westport Schools and graduated from Staples High School in 1946 followed by secretarial training at Merrill's Business School in South Norwalk CT.

Mrs. Walker first worked for Tristam & Fuller Department Store in Norwalk, and then for Sherwood Insurance of Westport. She was head clerk with the Connecticut State Police for twenty-five years prior to her retirement. She was first assigned to Troop A, formerly of Ridgefield and later with Troop G of Westport. An avid reader, she loved crossword puzzles, square dancing and enjoyed hosting social gatherings in her home. After retiring she volunteered at the Fairfield County Soil and Water District, for RSVP and for the travel committee at a local AARP. She also enjoyed playing Bunco with the Red Hats.

She is survived by a daughter, Marjorie “Mar” Walker of Danbury; two sisters, Marjorie Markwell of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Florence Smith of Vernon, Ct. and by 17 nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband Stanley and parents, she was predeceased by three sisters, Helen Leamer, Pearl Lapak and Lola Oden and by a brother, Chester Benziger.

Graveside services and burial will take place in St. Mary Cemetery of Ridgefield at a date and time to be announced. There will be no calling hours. Contributions in Mrs. Walker’s memory may be made to Daily Bread Food Pantry, St. James Church, 25 West Street, Danbury, Ct. 06810 or Regional Hospice and Home Care, 30 Milestone Road, Danbury, Ct. 06810. Kane Funeral Home, 25 Catoonah Street, Ridgefield, is in charge of arrangements.
