Rita Mary O’Brien Potter

Rita Mary O’Brien Potter, died February 21st at Danbury Healthcare. She was 98 years old, and had lived in Ridgefield her entire life.

Rita was born on October 12, 1916, a daughter of the late Patrick and Nellie (O’Brien) Potter. A native of Ridgefield, she grew up on the Scripps estate on West Mountain and went to school at the Peter Parley Schoolhouse. She was a graduate of Ridgefield High School, class of 1934. Rita worked as a kitchen maid at the Lynch estate until she saved enough to attend Danbury Business School; after graduation, she worked for Francis Martin Jewelry and for the Town of Ridgefield. In 1942 Rita enlisted in the United States Marines, was stationed at Marine Headquarters in Washington DC, and served as Staff Sergeant in the Paymasters Department until her honorable discharge at the end of WWII in 1945.

Rita returned to her family in Ridgefield and embarked on a long and distinguished career as an executive secretary for American Mercury Magazine, Electrical Mechanical Research (EMR) and The Wiltek Corporation. After her retirement she remained active in the community, volunteering for St. Mary’s Parish and the Keeler Tavern.

Rita was an original member of the Women in Military Service for America Memorial in Arlington, VA, a national memorial honoring women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. She was a lifelong member of St. Mary Parish, the Rosary Society, the Adoration Society, and frequent altar server.

Rita was predeceased by her parents, her sister Patricia McManus and her nephew Peter James McManus.  She is survived by her nieces and husbands Michele and John Masi of Danbury, Eileen and Edward Dempsey of Avon, Maureen and Richard Gawlik of Andover, MA, Sheenah and Philip Mische of Ridgefield, and her nephew and wife Mark and Elizabeth McManus of Ridgefield, as well as many great nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, February 28, at 1:00 p.m., in St. Mary’s Church, Ridgefield. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

There will be no calling hours.
