John N. Deep

John N. DeepJohn N. Deep, age 90, of Danbury, passed away Sunday, June 21, 2015, Father’s Day, surrounded by his loving family at Regional Hospice Center for Comfort Care & Healing, Danbury. He was the beloved husband of the late Mary (Saba) Deep. John was born in Lawrence, MA on May 29, 1925 to the late Mary (Harp) and Alexander Deep. He moved with his family to Danbury at age 1 and has been a lifelong member of this community.

John attended the former Balmforth Avenue School and graduated from Danbury Trade School, now known as Henry Abbott Tech.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in WWII and was a Motor Machinist 2nd Class on the USS Shakori. John, along with his brothers, Eddie and Joe all served at the same time. Upon his return to Danbury, he worked for Sam Schwack at the former Sam’s Market located on North Street and eventually purchased the business.

In Feb. 1949, John was the best man at his cousin’s wedding. There he met Mary who was the maid of honor for her sister. Seven months later, on Sept. 10, 1949 John and Mary were married. They proceeded to raise a family and create a very successful business. Johnny’s Market, a small corner grocery store, eventually turned into Deep’s Market which opened in 1965 and was a community landmark for over 50 years. Often times, people would say that Deep’s Market was their first job. John was a good, honest man who expected the same from the people he worked with. His handshake was his word. He eventually branched out into the Trellis Restaurant and Deep’s Hardware.

After his retirement, John and Mary traveled and wintered in Florida where they made wonderful friends. John was an avid golfer and pretty much lived at Richter Park. He was happiest when he was able to say he shot his age. He was happily enjoying golf until about 1 year ago.

John was a founding member and on the Board of Directors of the Nutmeg Federal Savings and Loan, which is now Webster Bank. He was a member of St. Anthony’s Maronite Church, Richter Park Authority and the Richter Park Men’s Club where he enjoyed his Wednesday outings with the Richter Park Seniors and very much enjoyed his Wednesday night card games with a great group of friends.

John was predeceased by Mary, his wife of 59 years, parents, Mary and Alex, brothers, James, James II, Edward, Joseph, his sister Jeanette and his son-in-law Tony DeSanto.

He is survived by his 5 children, Johanne and her husband Ted Taft of Wilton, CT, Jack and his wife Chrissy Deep of New Fairfield, CT, Susan DeSanto of Bethel, CT, Nancy and her husband Gary Damici of Danbury, CT and Mary Beth and her husband Keith Palmer of New Fairfield, CT; his grandchildren, Lauren and Adam Taft, Alex (Jessica) Deep, Steven and Taryn Deep, Katy, Lindsay and John Damici and Nicole and Keith Palmer.
