Phillipp BaumannPhilipp Henry Baumann, age 81 of Ridgefield, beloved husband of Rita A. Baumann died at the Center for Comfort Care and Healing, Regional Hospice in Danbury, CT on Wednesday, August 19, after a long battle with cancer. He was born in Flushing, NY on May 11, 1934, son of the late Herman and Josephine (Deibert) Baumann.

Phil graduated from Woodbury High School, Woodbury, CT. in 1952. Before graduating high school, he earned his pilot’s license by washing and cleaning airplanes at the Danbury Airport. This is where his lifelong passion for flying began. He graduated from the University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering where he was a member of Pi Tau Sigma and Tau Beta Pi. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Air Force in 1957 and received his silver wings as an Air Force jet pilot in 1958 at Laredo Air Force base, TX where he was named Outstanding Officer of his class. During his time in the United States Air Force, Phil flew the T-33 T-Bird Jet Trainer, F-102 Delta Dart Jet, F-86 North American Sabre Jet, L-20 Utility emergency evacuation utility propeller plane, and the T-34 Beechcraft Mentor and the T-28 Trojan both Propeller Trainers. He also flew the twin engine planes Boeing C-47 transport plane and the Convair T-29 trainer as well as the four engine C-54 Skymaster transport plane. In addition to airplanes, he also spent some time flying the Sikorsky H-19 Chickasaw helicopter. He always told his family that he loved the Air Force and his favorite time was when he was assigned to the 331st Fighter Interceptor Squadron of the Aerospace Defense Command where he flew the F-102 Delta Dart. While on active duty, he was able to return to the University of Connecticut where he received his Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 1963. In 1967 he left the Air Force to pursue a career in civilian flying with United Airlines. Phil had a 32 year career with United Airlines from 1967 to 1999. He flew numerous jet liners for United including the DC-8, DC-10, 727, 737, 757, and 767. He loved flying as a Captain in the 757 and 767 aircraft because he was able to share his extensive flying experiences with younger and newer pilots. He took great pride in helping to develop these young pilots. He also received his Learjet rating in 1977.

In retirement, Phil was very active in his community. He was an usher and money counter at his church, St. Elizabeth Seton Parish since moving to Ridgefield, CT. in 1978. He also served in the Fire Police for the Ridgefield Volunteer Fire Department since 2000. These two organizations were his passion and meant a great deal to him because of the close personal relationships he developed inside these organizations. Phil also served on the Ridgefield Town Ethics Commission for ten years. He was also a member of the Ridgefield Men’s club and the American Legion.

Phil is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Rita A. Baumann, formerly of Danbury, CT; two loving sons Philipp H. Baumann, Jr. and his wife Kimberly of North Stonington, CT. and David Baumann of Southington, CT.; three adoring grandchildren Philipp H.
