Frederick C. Layda

Frederick Charles Layda, 92, of Ridgefield, died peacefully on June 25, 2014 at Bethel Health Care. He was the husband of the late Dorothy (Flynn) Layda who predeceased him in 1993.

Fred was born on Christmas Day in 1921. He was raised in Stamford and graduated from Wright Technical School before enlisting in the US Army. He served his country honorably in World War II as a member of the Fifth Infantry, fighting in France and Germany. After the war, Fred and Dot built a home in Ridgefield to raise their family.

Fred was an accomplished mechanical engineer and he enjoyed a long career working for Remington Rand, Smith Corona and Pitney Bowes. His expertise of the electric typewriter and the original mail inserting machines was well known.

In retirement, he enjoyed his day trips with Dot to Vermont and Pennsylvania as well as other destinations. He also enjoyed golf, visiting Cape Cod and Florida and following the UCONN Huskies women’s basketball team.

Fred is survived by his two daughters, Susan Layda of Ridgefield, Cynthia Lawrence and her husband Jeffery of Bethel, five grandchildren; Sandra Ruth of New Jersey, Danielle Legnard of Bethel, Todd Martin of Washington, Jeremy Lawrence of Colorado and Bennett Lawrence of Bethel. He is also survived by eight great grandchildren

Fred was also predeceased by two brothers Emil and Louis and a sister, Anne.

Private Services are being held at the direction of the family.
