Albert L. Kraus

Albert L. Kraus, 91, of Danbury, CT passed away on Monday, June 30, 2014 surrounded by his loving family. He was the cherished husband of Margaret (Corcoran) Kraus.

Al was born March 4, 1923 in the Bronx, New York, to the late Albert and Sally (Deneen) Kraus.  He was a proud U.S. Navy WW II veteran, serving aboard a minesweeper in the Mediterranean and North African theaters. He participated in the invasion of Sicily, (Salerno) Italy and Southern France including operations at the Anzio beachhead.c After the war, Al graduated from Niagara University in New York and worked for many years at Olin Corporation in New York City and later in Stamford, CT before retiring in 1983.  He lived and raised his family in the 1950’s and 60’s in Syosset (Long Island), New York and then moved in 1969 to Ridgefield, CT where he spent many happy years before moving in 1995 to Danbury, CT.  He was active in the St. Mary's church community, as well as, coaching local Little League and sports teams in the Ridgefield area. After retirement, Al volunteered for many years at Good Shepherd House and Pivot Ministries in Norwalk, CT.

In addition to his wife, Margaret, of 64 years, he is survived by his eight children- Mary Crowe and her husband Ken of Corte Madera, CA; Patricia Coleman and her husband James of Colorado Springs, CO; Margaret Rumrill and her husband George of Groton, CT;  Kevin Kraus and his wife Mary Jane of Old Greenwich, CT; Kathleen Thivierge of Highlands Ranch, CO; Albert Kraus and his wife Shelley of Goodyear, AZ; and Eileen Drake Cipolla and her husband Ron of Bethel, CT; and Robert Kraus and his wife Catherine of Newtown, CT; as well as 17 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his sister, Sally Cavanaugh; granddaughter, Sandra Drake; and son in law, Ricky Thivierge.

Al was a true patriarch of his large family and an incredibly kind, generous, and loving man to all he encountered. He was admired for his great intellect, love of family and deep faith.  He will be greatly missed and will forever hold a special place in our hearts.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, July 5, 2014 at 11am in St. Gregory the Great Church, 85 Great Plain Rd., Danbury. The family will receive friends at St. Gregory the Great Church on Saturday, July 5, 2014 from10-11a.m., preceding the mass. Al will rest in peace at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Ridgefield, CT. Contributions may be made in Al's memory to the Arthritis Foundation or the charity of your choice.
