Harold E. Kershner
 
Harold E. Kershner, 86, of Woodbury, CT, formerly of Ridgefield, CT and Rye, NH, husband of Patricia Frey Kershner, died on Saturday, September 6, 2014 at Bethel Health Care, Bethel, CT.
 
“Hal” was born in Cleveland, Ohio, October 29, 1927 to Willis and Louise (Cowles) Kershner. The family relocated to Staten Island, NY in 1929 where Hal attended PS 40 and Brooklyn Tech High School.   
 
After serving in the U.S Navy for one year and the U. S. Army for three years, Harold was honorably discharged from both service branches and later graduated from Northeastern University in 1953 with a B.S. in Industrial Engineering.
 
Hal joined IBM in 1962 and after a long industrious career, he retired in March, 1990.
 
Originally a member of the Episcopal faith, Hal became a Catholic in 1953 and became fully involved in his new religion. He led the prayer group at St. Mary Parish of Ridgefield for many years, organized and led the first Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) program at St Mary and was a Eucharistic Minister.
 
After living in Twixt Hills, Ridgefield for 26 years, he and his wife of 41 years, Lois built a home in Rye, New Hampshire.
 
Upon her death in 1994, Hal was then united in marriage to Patricia Frey in 1996.   They relocated to Woodbury CT.
 
Hal enjoyed his time his by participating for many years in Ridgefield Boy Scouts.   He will be remembered as being able to fix almost anything around the home, love of dogs (especially Golden Retrievers), cooking, bread making, love of fine dining and being a diehard fan of the New York Yankees.  His humor and wit were contagious.
 
In addition to his wife of 18 years, Patricia Frey Kershner of Newtown, he is survived by his five children; William Kershner of Baldwinsville NY, Kathleen (Bruce) Gibbons of Middleburg Heights OH, Robert Kershner (Mae) of Lovettsville VA,  James (Ann) Kershner of Park Ridge, IL, and John  Kershner of Concord, NH. In addition, he leaves three stepchildren; CT State Representative John Frey of Ridgefield, Alicia Frey (Paul) Bernarducci of Franklin Lakes NJ, and Patricia Frey (Steven) Gogliettino of Newtown, CT.   He is also survived by 17 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, a sister, Alice Kershner Hesper of Lakewood, NJ.
 
In addition to his late wife, Lois Kelly Kershner, he was predeceased by a brother, John Kershner, and by two sisters; Margaret Kershner Brigham and Jean Kershner Patterson.
 
Hal's family would like to thank the staff of Bethel Health Care for the extraordinary care provided to him during his stay. 
 
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated   Church in on Tuesday, September 9, at 10:15 A.M. in St. Mary Church, Ridgefield. 

 Burial will follow in St Mary's Cemetery.
The family will receive friends in the Kane Funeral Home, 25 Catoonah St., Ridgefield on Tuesday from 8:45 am to 9:45 am.
