Robert (Bob) Charles Thies

Robert ThiesRobert (Bob) Charles Thies, 84 of Middlebury, Connecticut passed away at his home on Sunday morning after a battle with cancer. He was born on November 25, 1928 in Queens, New York to Henry and Ellie (Lange) Thies. Henry worked as a bookkeeper and Ellie was a homemaker.

Bob graduated from The City College of New York with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. Shortly after college, Bob met and married Joy Hart of New York. Joy was an artist and fashion model. He then served in the Navy during the Korean War as an electronics specialist.

After the Navy, Bob took additional classes in chemistry at NYU, before beginning his career as a chemist at GAF. Soon after Bob realized that he preferred the business side of GAF and became a salesman in the St. Louis office. From there he moved to the San Francisco, Chicago and New York offices before he left to join Union Carbide Corporation in 1963. At Union Carbide, Bob worked in sales and marketing at the firm’s headquarters in New York City and then subsequently Danbury. He was the Marketing Manager of the Hydrocarbons Group until his retirement in 1986. Bob resided in Ridgefield from 1978 to 2007.

Bob’s interests included electronics and computers, sailing and reading. He was a devoted husband and father and loved to spend weekends with his family.

Bob is survived by his two sons and their spouses, Scott and Sharon Thies of Seattle, Washington and Mark and Kathy Thies of North Salem, New York, as well as three grandchildren, Paul, Jack and Caroline Thies.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joy, and his brother Henry (“Hank”) Thies of Smithtown, New York.

Funeral services will take place on Saturday, November 16, 2013 at 12 noon in St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 351 Main St., Ridgefield with Rev. Whitney Altopp, officiating.

The Family will receive friends at the Kane Funeral Home 25 Catoonah St., Ridgefield , on Friday, Nov. 15, 2013 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM.
