Petra Pedernales (Meken )

Petra (Goitia) Pedernales, 85, of Wilton formerly of New Canaan, CT and Brookfield, CT died on Thursday, May 3, 2012 at Laurel Ridge Health Care Center, Ridgefield.

She was the wife of the late Marcel Pedernales.

Mrs. Pedernales was born in the Basque Region of Spain, April 2, 1927 a daughter of the late Thomas and Felicia (Echevarria) Goitia.  Proud of her Basque heritage, she grew up under the oppressive Franco regime, attended schools in Spain and immigrated to the United States in 1954, first settling in New York, NY and later Queens, New York.  After the death of her husband, she moved to Brookfield in 1989 and in 1992 moved to Dallas, Texas with her daughter’s family.  In 1998, she returned to Connecticut, first settling in New Canaan and in 2008 to Wilton.

She enjoyed gardening and cooking as well as animals, most especially dogs, and the opportunity to travel back to the Basque Region of Spain.

A former member of St. Aloysius Parish of New Canaan, Mrs. Pedernales attended St. Mary Parish Ridgefield and was a member of the Basque Club of Brooklyn, NY.

Mrs. Pedernales is survived by a daughter, Toni Meken and her husband, Gene of Wilton; her granddaughter, Angelica Pasakiolis and her husband, Manny; a great grandson, Gene Pasakiolis and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, May 7, 2012 at 10:15 AM in St. Mary Church, 55 Catoonah St., Ridgefield with Father Peter K. Smolik, Parochial Vicar officiating.  The family will receive friends in the Kane Funeral Home, 25 Catoonah St., Ridgefield on Monday from 9 AM to 10 AM.

Interment will take place in St. Peter Cemetery, Danbury.
