Sandra Durkin Guthrie of Ridgefield, CT, wife of Dr. James F. Guthrie, died on Tuesday, February 21, 2012 at Norwalk Hospital after a lengthy battle with cancer.  She was 77.

Sandy, as she was known, was born in Poughkeepsie, NY, on September 14, 1934, the only daughter of the late Clara Korvis and Martin Joseph Durkin.  After moving to Scotch Plains, NJ, Sandy graduated from Scotch Plains High School and then went on to receive a Degree in Nursing from the Bellevue School of Nursing in 1955.   After attending the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA and Hunter College in New York, NY, Sandy worked as a Registered Nurse at Bellevue Hospital in New York, NY where she was the head nurse of the Urology Department.  While at Bellevue she also worked on the prison ward, experience she often joked was well suited to raising her four children.

A former 21-year resident of New Canaan, Sandy was very active in community and school affairs and a strong supporter of the activities of her husband and children.  A long time member of the Norwalk Hospital Women’s Board, Sandy was co-chairman of the annual Norwalk Hospital Gala for many years and volunteer at the Treasure House, the Norwalk Hospital Thrift Shop.  She was also a fundraiser for the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons Research Foundation, an organization founded by her husband.  Sandy adored her children and actively supported their scholastic and athletic endeavors both in the classroom and along the sidelines and was a member of the Parents’ Committee at the Eaglebrook School in Deerfield, MA.

After moving to Ridgefield, CT in 2000, Sandy was a member of the Sacred Heart Parish in Georgetown, CT where she was a lector for many years.  A dog lover with a particular fondness for the chocolate Labrador Retrievers she raised through the years, Sandy was often seen at the Ridgefield Dog Park with her dogs, Murphy, Tucker and Cutie.

Some of her happiest moments were spent on Nantucket at her family’s home where she had a strict open door policy for the endless stream of her children’s friends (and friends of friends) who affectionately referred to her as “Momma G”.

“Her family deeply mourns her loss, remembering with great love her tenacity, ingenuity, legendary hospitality and indomitable love of her family and friends,” said her family.

She is survived by her husband of almost 50 years, James F. Guthrie, MD, her four children, Camille Guthrie of New Canaan, CT and Kelly Shackelford, James Guthrie of Houston, TX and his wife, Piya,  Durkin Guthrie of Los Angeles, CA and his wife, Karen, and Jefferson Guthrie of Ridgefield, CT.  She is also survived by her grandsons, Cole, Kyle and Liam, her brother, James Durkin and his wife, Elaine, her sister-in-law, Anne Durkin, 5 nieces and nephews and 11 great-nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, Clara and Martin Joseph Durkin and her brother, Martin Joseph Durkin.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10am on Friday, February 24 at Sacred Heart Parish, 30 Church Street, Redding, CT with a reception immediately following at Sacred Heart, Pryor-Hubbard Hall.   Interment will be private.  The family will receive friends on Thursday, from 5 to 8pm at the Kane Funeral Home, 25 Catoonah Street, Ridgefield, CT.

Memorial contributions in her name may be made to the Norwalk Hospital Foundation, 34 Maple Street, Norwalk, CT 06856.
