Dorothy Cooney Galligan

Dorothy (Cooney) Galligan died May 28, 2012 at her home in Ridgefield; she was 82 years old.  Dorothy was born in New York City on November 10, 1929, daughter of Luke and Alice (Nelson) Cooney.  She married John Patrick Galligan in New York City in 1951.

Mrs. Galligan, the thirteenth of sixteen children, was born and raised in the Bronx.

In 1962, Mrs. Galligan and her husband moved to Ridgefield where their home was the focus of raising their family of five children and making that home a warm and loving place.  She had a flair for interior decorating; her home reflected love of the Colonial and Victorian eras which attracted her so strongly to the town of Ridgefield.  She enjoyed baking and sharing those baked delights with her loved ones, especially her grandchildren.

She was a member of St. Mary Parish of Ridgefield and participated in the Marriage Encounter Program as well as serving as a Eucharistic Minister.  Mrs. Galligan attended daily Mass at St. Mary Church and could be seen walking on Main Street with the friends she met through her participation in church activities.  Always ready with a kind word and a genuine interest in others, Mrs. Galligan was an affirming presence in the community.  All this was rooted in the deep spirituality which was fostered by her faith and the strong friendships she had cultivated in this faith-filled setting.

She is survived by her son, Michael Galligan of Ridgefield and daughter-in-law, Nancy of Vero Beach, FL; her daughters, Dorothy Doty and husband, William of Ridgefield; Mary Feneley and husband, Craig of Oak Hill, VA; Bernadette Haight of Brentwood, TN; daughter-in-law Stacy Galligan of Washington, CT; and her grandchildren, Shannon Galligan of Vero Beach, FL; Thomas and Patrick Doty of Ridgefield; Bryant, Jennafer, and Erin Galligan of Washington, CT; Michael and Jack Feneley of Oak Hill, VA; Kelsey and Alden Haight of Brentwood, TN; her sisters, Martha Hanna of Toms River, NJ, and Helen Trahey of Harrison, NY ; and her brother John Cooney of East Rutherford, NJ.

Mrs. Galligan was predeceased by her husband, John Patrick Galligan in 2010 and her son, John Patrick Galligan, Jr., in 2006.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, June 1, 2012 at 1:15 PM in St. Mary Church, Ridgefield with Msgr. Laurence Bronkiewicz, Pastor officiating.  Burial will follow at St. Mary Cemetery.  The family will receive friends at the Kane Funeral Home, 25 Catoonah Street, on Thursday, May 31, 2012 from 5 to 8 p.m.
