Joseph P. Donohue, Sr.



Joseph P. Donohue, Sr., 94 of Ridgefield, husband of the late Angelina (Amabile) Donohue died on Sunday, March 25, 2012 at the Danbury Hospital.

Mr. Donohue was born in Rye, NY, June 4, 1917, a son of the late Patrick J. and Mary (Ehret) Donohue.

He was raised in Mamaroneck, NY and attended and graduated from Mamaroneck schools and attended Cornell University.

A retired operating engineer, he was first employed with the Town of Mamaroneck and later was a partner in the Donohue Construction Company of Westchester County, NY.  A member of the Operating Engineers, Local #478 of Hamden, CT, he was also associated with the former Forano Brothers, Shawmut Heavy Equipment Co., Brookfield Baylor Co. and Morganti Construction Co.

He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran having served as a Seabee and attaining the rank of Chief Petty Officer.  He served in the Aleutian Islands and South Pacific along with the 6th Marine Division.

A resident of Ridgefield for the past fifty-three years coming from Stamford, Mr. Donohue was a member of the National Old Timer’s Auto Racing Club, American Racing Drivers Club, Northeastern Midget Racing Association and the Atlantic Coast Old Timer’s Auto Racing Club.

Mr. Donohue was a member of St. Mary Parish, Ridgefield.

He is survived by a daughter, MaryJane Lutrus of Ridgefield; two sons, Joseph P. Donohue, Jr. and his wife, Mary of Lincolnton, NC and Robert J. Donohue of Woodbury, CT; eight grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, March 29, 2012 at 1:15 PM in St. Mary Church, Ridgefield.

Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery.

The family will receive friends in the Kane Funeral Home, 25 Catoonah St., Ridgefield on Thursday from 11:45 AM to 12:45 PM.
