Vasiliki Kakavas

Vasiliki Kakavas, age 106, passed away peacefully on April 23, 2011 at Hancock Hall in Danbury where she was a resident for the past 5 ½ years.  She was born in 1905 in Pireaus, Greece, the oldest of five children, two of whom still survive in Greece.

She met and married her husband Spiros Kakavas in 1928 and emmigrated to the United States shortly thereafter.  During most of her life she resided in Washington, D.C. where she raised two daughters.  During WW II she was active in the Red Cross. For many years she was a member of the St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Washington, D.C. and for the past 36 years a member of the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Danbury.  She was also a life-long member of the Ladies Philoptochos Society, the women’s auxiliary of the Orthodox Church.  For many years she loved to sew and worked as a seamstress for Elizabeth Arden.  She loved to cook for her family, and her great love was caring for her many potted plants.  She lived in her own condominium until she was 100 years old.

She is survived by her two daughters, Golfo Stephanadis and her husband Steve of Waldorf, Maryland, and Nike Cutsumpas and her husband Lloyd of Danbury, Connecticut.  Four grandchildren also survive her: Jim Stephanadis and his wife Becky; Hope Stephanadis; John Cutsumpas and his wife Karen; Ted Cutsumpas and his wife Alicia; and six great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Laura, and Katy Stephanadis, and Nicholas, Rachel, and Maxwell Cutsumpas.

The Rite of Burial will take place on Wednesday, April 27th at 11:00 am in the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 30 Clapboard Ridge Rd., Danbury with the Rev. Father Peter Karloutsos officiating.

Burial will take place in Washington, DC.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Ladies Philoptochos Society of the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 30 Clapboard Ridge Road, Danbury, Connecticut 06811.
