Shirley N. Ondrick

Shirley OndrickShirley (Nelson) Ondrick, 79 of Ridgefield, CT, passed away Saturday at her Ridgefield home with her children, David and Beth and two nieces, Christine and Cindy by her side.

A Connecticut native, Shirley was born June 19, 1932, daughter of George and Dorothy (Nessel) Nelson. She attended New Britain schools before attending Boston University, where she majored in liberal studies. It was at Boston University where she started dating William F. Ondrick, her future husband, also from New Britain. While at Boston University, Shirley became a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. During the summers, while attending Boston University, Shirley would waitress at the Chequit Inn on Shelter Island.

In 1955, Shirley married Bill in Vaihingen, Germany while Bill was assigned to the 7th Army stationed in Germany. In 1957, Shirley and Bill moved to Elmhurst, Queens where they started their life together. While living in New York, Shirley and Bill attended countless NY Yankee and NY Giant Football games. 

In 1963, Shirley and Bill moved to Hoboken, NJ. where Bill was a Professor of music at Stevens Institute of Technology. In 1965, Shirley and Bill bought their house in Ridgefield, where they would spend the weekends and summers before they both retired in 1998.

Shirley’s professional life included working for the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey as an assistant to the manager of Newark Airport for 10 years, for the financial firm, Daeske Inc. of Westport, CT and Keswick Management of NYC prior to her retirement.

Once retiring in 1998, Shirley and Bill enjoyed traveling, taking the Family on an annual cruise and frequently traveling to Florida to watch the Yankees during spring training. Shirley’s passion for her grandchildren was inspiring. Whether it was a soccer game or lacrosse
