Joseph C. Smith, 87, of South Salem, husband of Josephine (Brigati) Smith died on Sunday, May 23, 2010 at Hancock Hall, Danbury, CT.

Mr. Smith was born in the Bronx, New York, May 15, 1923, son of Joseph and Mary Ellen (Freeley) Smith.

He attended Bronx, NY schools and was a WWII U.S. Army veteran and later served as a Merchant Marine.

In years past, Mr. Smith was first employed as a RCA Television repairman and retired from Perkin-Elmer Corporation as an electronics engineer and a worker on the Hubble space telescope.

A resident of South Salem for the past sixty years, Mr. Smith was a member of the Marquette Council, Knights of Columbus of Ridgefield and St. Mary’s Church.

He enjoyed carpentry, electronics especially operating a ham radio, ice skating, sailing, golf and camping.

In addition to his wife of sixty-two years, Mr. Smith is survived by three sons, Robert J. (Teresa) Smith and Thomas N. (Linda) Smith all of Punta Gorda, FL and Joel C. (Monica) Smith of Lewisboro, NY; two daughters, JoAnn Sara Wurtzel of Jerusalem, Israel and Constance Mary (Richard) Labbe of Watertown, CT’ a sister, Catherine (George) Hannagan of Shrub Oak, NY; eighteen grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, May 27th at 1:15 PM in St. Mary’s Church, 55 Catoonah St., Ridgefield.

Burial will follow in South Salem Cemetery, South Salem, NY will military honors.

The family will receive friends in the Kane Funeral Home, 25 Catoonah St., Ridgefield on Wednesday from 2PM to 4PM and 7PM to 9PM.
