Robert K. Mirrielees, 95, Ridgefield resident

Robert Kelly Mirrielees Jr., a Ridgefield resident for 15 years died peacefully Wednesday, November 10, at home with his family by his side.  His wife, Elinor, and son, Robert Alan predeceases him.  Robert was born March 21, 1915 in Brooklyn, NY, son of Lillian and Robert Mirrielees.  He grew up in Brooklyn and attended New York University at night, earning his degree in accounting.  Robert was employed for 50 years with Diamond International Corporation (formerly known as Diamond Match Co.), retiring as their Comptroller in 1984.  After being transferred to Bangor, Maine by Diamond for 9 years, he was returned to the New York City office in 1978, at which time he resided in Somers, NY.  Due to Elinor’s health issues, they moved to Ridgefield in 1995 to be closer to their daughter, Elizabeth and her family.

     Robert was an active member and past president of the National Association of Accountants both on Long Island and in Maine.  In 1978, he received recognition for his many contributions to the Civic and business interests of the greater Bangor-Brewer area in Maine.

     Mr. Mirrielees was an avid stamp collector all his life, loved to play golf, and enjoyed gardening in his retirement. He was an active member of the United Methodist Church, Elmont, NY, the First Congregational Church, Bangor, Maine, serving on many boards and committees, and currently was a member of Ridgebury Congregational Church in Ridgefield.  Robert was also a member of the Rotary Club in Bangor, Maine.

     Robert will be remembered for his laugh and ability to “chat” with everyone and anyone he met along life’s way.  As a depression era child, he had many stories to tell which molded the way he lived his life.

     He is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth Sganga and husband Vincent of Ridgefield, his son, Bruce Mirrielees and wife, Kristine of Fort Thomas, Kentucky and his daughter-in-law Amanda Mirrielees of Rapid City, South Dakota; 8 grandchildren, Matthew Sganga and wife, Sheila, of Ridgefield, Andrew Sganga and wife Carol Ann of Ridgefield, Ellie Hill and husband, Jason of Chattanooga, TN, Jeff Mirrielees of Charleston, SC, Katie Mirrielees and Brian Mirrielees of Fort Thomas, KY, Ryan Mirrielees and Samuel Mirrielees of Rapid City, SD.  Robert is also survived by 5 great grandchildren, Lauren Sganga, Timothy Sganga, Emily Sganga, Natalie Sganga and Nicholas Sganga all of Ridgefield.

     A Memorial Service will take place Saturday, November 27th at 1:00pm at Ridgebury Congregational Church, 605 Ridgebury Road, Ridgefield, CT followed by internment at the Ridgebury Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Regional Hospice of Western Connecticut, 405 Main Street, Danbury, CT 06810.
