Margaret Harrington Mariano

Margaret Harrington Mariano, 85, died May 21, 2010 at Bethel Health Care Center of pancreatic cancer. She was born August 24, 1924 in Mount Vernon, NY, the daughter of Agnes Jack and Allen Hamblen.
 
She grew up in Mount Vernon and received a BA in Elementary Education from Mills College in NYC. She moved to Lincolndale after her marriage to Frank P. Mitchell. After her husband’s death, she married Robert A. Harrington. They later lived in Chappaqua, where she started her teaching career, taking time off to raise her family. The family also lived in Carmel, Vista, and Katonah, NY. She worked at Meadow Pond Elementary School teaching kindergarten for 30 years. She loved her kindergarteners and her co-workers, and the loyalty of these school friends over the years meant the world to her. She retired July 1, 1991 at age 67.
 
She was actively involved in her children’s education and school life and especially enjoyed entertaining friends at dinners or cookouts. The family vacationed in Maine and took educational trips all over the Northeast. She took special pleasure in watching her two grandchildren grow into caring and responsible young adults.
 
Her final place of residence was Ridgefield, CT, where she was a member of the First Congregational Church until moving to the Bethel Health Care Center. There, on Feb. 13, 2010 she married Angelo Mariano.
 
Margaret is survived by her husband, Angelo Mariano of Bethel, CT, daughter Susan Mitchell of Middlesex, VT, her son Frank Allen Mitchell and his wife Barbara of Williamstown, VT and her son Robert Bruce Harrington of Bedford Hill, NY. Her grandchildren are Tyler and Lauren Mitchell, and she is survived by a cousin, Mary Jane Hamblen. She was preceded in death by her second husband.
 
A memorial service celebrating her life will be held on Saturday, June 5, 2010 at the First Congregational Church in Ridgefield, CT at 11:00 a.m. You are invited to share  your memories. Burial will take place in Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla, NY at the convenience of the family.
