Carlos Hernandez, 82, father of Wiltonian

Carlos Hernandez, father of Amanda Lord, of Wilton, CT and Yanina Pascual, of Doylestown, PA, died on Monday morning, November 29, at Wilton Meadows.

Mr. Hernandez was born in Bogotá, Colombia, September 30, 1928, son of the late Emilio and Carmen (Moreno) Hernandez.

He came to the United States in 1952 from Colombia in search of an education and the American dream. He first settled in Queens, NY.

He was a U.S. Army veteran who learned to speak English from his fellow soldiers.

Mr. Hernandez was employed for many years with Honeywell Corporation. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Connecticut.

He lived most of his life in Willimantic, CT.  He was passionate about music, amassing over 500 hundred albums, ranging from the Colombian music to the Rolling Stones. He hosted his own radio show on WILI, which was always a highlight of his week.  He also loved to share his culture with his friends.  For many years, he taught Spanish in an adult education program where he shared his music, ethnic food and lively conversation. 

He was a loving father and grandfather who taught his family the importance of education, hard work, cultural heritage, hometown roots and maintaining family bonds.

In addition to his daughters, he is survived by his sons-in-law, Michael Lord and Jack Pascual; two sisters, Cecilia Hernandez of Florida and Lola Salazar of Colombia; a brother, Pablo Munoz; four grandsons, Alex, Jordan, Nicholas and Marcos, as well as many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, December 4th, 2010 at 11 AM in Sacred Heart Church, Georgetown, CT.

Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Wilton.

There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 225 North Michigan Ave, Floor 17, Chicago, IL, 60601.
