Walter J. Gengarelly

Walter J. Gengarelly, 75, of Danbury, a former Ridgefielder who in recent years resided in Newtown and Danbury, died on Friday, September 24,2010 at Danbury Hospital.

Mr. Gengarelly was born in New York, NY, son of Walter J.  and Jeanette (Dwyer) Gengarelly and was raised in farming areas of Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

Upon completion of his education and college, he became a licensed commercially rated pilot and flight instructor and a retired advertising sales representative.

A U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War era, Mr. Gengarelly was an advocate for veterans in recent years and was one of the first residents in the City of Danbury Home for Veterans.

Active in the Libertarian Party, Mr. Gengarelly once ran for governor of Connecticut, selectman of Ridgefield and congressman for the Fifth District.  Mr. Gengarelly was running for the Fifth District seat in this year’s mid-term elections.

He has been an area resident since 1976 coming from Vermont.

Mr. Gengarelly is survived by two sons, Walter J. Gengarelly, III of Denver, CO and Greg H. Gengarelly of Orange Co., CA; 2 sisters, Virginia Wood of Aiken, SC and Linda Gengarelly of Mechanicsville, PA and his former wife, Beverly Hayes of Groton Long Point, CT .

A Celebration of Walter’s Life will take place at the Ethan Allen Inn, Danbury, on Monday, October 4, 2010 from 5:30PM to 8:30PM.
