Rene E. Franks, Sr.

Rene E. Franks, Sr., 85 of Ridgefield, died on Wednesday, May 5th 2010 at his home.

He was the husband of Dorothy (Dowd) Franks.

Rene was born in the Bronx, NY, September 24, 1924, son of Phoenix and Helen(Greene) Franks. He attended New York schools as well as several trade and technical schools where he received certifications.

Rene was a World War II veteran having served in the Army Air Corps. Upon return from his tour of duty, he married his high school sweetheart and made Ridgefield their hometown.  He was hotel manager at Stonehenge Inn before going into sales and eventually owning his own tool business. 

Upon his retirement, he held part-time positions locally and wintered in Fellsmere, Florida where he served on the annual Frog Leg Festival and Fellsmere Day committees.

A resident of Ridgefield for the past sixty-four years he was a member of the Everett Ray Seymour Post American Legion. He served as an usher and later head usher at the Jesse Lee Memorial United Methodist Church in Ridgefield. He was recently honored as head usher after 50 years of service. Having spent many years organizing the Ridgefield Memorial Day parade, Mr. Franks was honored as the Grand Marshall.

He was a Ham Radio operator and enjoyed gardening and nature. But his three biggest loves were God, hi s family and his country.

In addition to his wife of 64 years, he is survived by two daughters, Carol  J. Gibson and her husband, Ken of Bethel and Donna L. Caserta and her husband, Ken of Stratford; a sister Vivienne Rabidue of Atlantic Heights, NJ; three grandchildren, Heather Nelson, KC Gibson and Aimee Pinckney and six great grandchildren, KristenMary, Paul, Grace, Mathias, Abby and Keegan.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Franks was predeceased by a son, Rene E. Franks, Jr., and two brothers, Phoenix Franks, Jr. and Gerald Franks.

Funeral Services will take place on Monday, May 10th at 10am in Jesse Lee Memorial United Methodist Church, Ridgefield with the Rev. William B. Pfohl, Senior Pastor, officiating.

Interment will take place in Valley View Cemetery, Dover Plains, NY

The family will receive friends in the Kane Funeral Home, 25 Catoonah Street, Ridgefield on Sunday May 9th from 4pm to 7pm. www.kanefuneralhome.net

American Legion members will have a service on Sunday in the funeral home at 5pm

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Donna Caserta Scholarship Fund, St. Vincent’s Medical Center Foundation, 2800 Main St., Bridgeport, CT 06606 for the education of less fortunate candidates for nursing. www.stvh-ct.org
