WILLIAM L. BISCHOFF

William L. Bischoff of New York, NY, and uncle of Ridgefield, CT, resident Carey Johnson, died on Wednesday, December 22, 2010, at Laurel Ridge Nursing & Skilled Care Center, Ridgefield, CT.  He was 72 years old.

Mr. Bischoff was born in Dallas, TX, on October 20, 1938, son of the late Ludwig Bischoff and Jo Doris Hibner.  He was raised in Fresno, CA, excelling as a teenager at swimming and becoming a lifeguard at local pools.  He received his undergraduate degree from Stanford University and his PhD in German history from Harvard University.  He was a history professor at Bard College at Simon’s Rock, MA, and later moved to New York City where he specialized in numismatics and was a curator at the Newark Museum in Newark, NJ.

He lived for many years in New York City where he pursued his many scholarly and cultural interests.  For one of his last projects he traveled frequently to Mexico to research German immigration in the 19th century.  As was typical for Mr. Bischoff, he made many friends in the Mexican village he focused on for his research and became a well-known and beloved figure, especially for the children.  He had a rich, full life and leaves behind many good friends and a family that loved him dearly.

In addition to his niece, Carey Johnson, and her husband, Eduardo Carvalho, he is survived by:  his wife, Rosario Perez of New York, NY; his sister, JoAnna Reagan, and her husband, Robert, of Murphys, CA; his brother, Patrick Hibner, and his wife, Evelyn, of Sanger, CA; and his nephew, Eric Johnson, and his wife, Jessica Yee, of South Pasadena, CA.

The family would like to thank Dr. George Cohen of Ridgefield, Danbury Hospital, the Laurel Ridge Nursing & Skilled Care Center and Ridgefield Crossing Assisted Living Home for their exemplary care of our beloved Billy at the end of his life.

A memorial service will take place at a date and time to be announced.  There will be no visitation.

Kane Funeral Home, at 25 Catoonah St., Ridgefield, CT, is in charge of arrangements.
