Digby W. Barrios

Digby W. Barrios, 72, a retired president and chief executive officer of Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals died on Saturday, April 10, 2010 while travelling in Madaba, Jordan.

He was the husband of Anita Robert Barrios.

A Ridgefield, CT resident for the past twenty-eight years coming from Yardley, PA, Mr. Barrios was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, December 21, 1937, a son of the late Eugene and Ursula (Shubert) Barrios.

During his career in the pharmaceutical industry, he was a Group Vice President of Squibb and Sons.  He eventually became the President and C.E.O. of Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals in Ridgefield, CT. He was inducted into the Pharmaceutical Hall of Fame and also served on several corporate boards for start-up pharmaceutical companies.

A member of St. Mary’s Church, Ridgefield, Mr. Barrios was a daily communicant and served as Lay Member of the Parish Corporationt of St. Mary’s .

He was a Knight of Malta as well as a Knight of the Holy Sepulchre.

A humanitarian and philanthropist, he also served on many charitable and non-profit boards and was a founding member of the Inner City Foundation of Bridgeport, CT.

He also had a keen passion for the thoroughbred race horse industry.

In addition to his wife of fifty years, Anita, Mr. Barrios is survived by five children, Digby R. Barrios, Lauren Barrios O’Neill, Douglas Barrios, Allyce Barrios and Holly Barrios Buckley; a sister, Haydee Blanchard; ten grandchildren, Evan, Connor, Sean, Harry, Olivia, Max, Sonya, D.J., Henry and Ava and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Barrios was predeceased by a brother, Eugene.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, April 19th at 10:15am in St. Mary’s Church, Ridgefield.

The family will receive friends in the Kane Funeral Home, 25 Catoonah St., Ridgefield (www.kanefuneralhome.net) on Sunday, April 18th from 2PM to 6PM.

Memorial contributions to the Connecticut Center for Child Development, 95 Wolf Harbor Rd., Milford, CT 06461 (www.cccdinc.org) a school for children with autism where Digby’s grandson is a student would be appreciated.
